Dear LCES Parents/Guardians,
Greetings from the LCES PE department! We would like to take a moment to share a few things with you. First, our PE classes look different than they have previously been. This year, we have added an additional PE teacher, Mr. Brewer, to our staff.  So, your child sees both of us each week. We also have a rotational schedule each week.  One week, your child will come to PE Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The next week, it will be Tuesday and Thursday. It continues to rotate as such throughout the year. Your child’s teacher has the days listed for the upcoming week in your child’s weekly schedule.
For the safety of the kids’ feet/ankles, and the gym floor, we ask that the students wear gym appropriate shoes on days they have PE.  If they are wearing other shoes, we have asked them to bring tennis shoes in their backpacks.  At the beginning of school, we reviewed procedures with all classes.  We explained, and continue to discuss with them, that PE appropriate shoes are as follows: tennis shoes (high-top or low-top), Hey Dudes, and Converse.  The following are not PE appropriate: Crocs, sandals, boots, flip-flops, etc.  We have told the kids many times that we are not upset with them and they are not in trouble if they are wearing these.  However, to protect their feet/ankles, and the gym floor, they will not be allowed to participate in the planned activity that day.  Instead, in order for them to still get physical activity, those who are not wearing appropriate shoes will just walk around the gym while the others participate in the day’s activities. Again, we make sure the children know they are not in trouble. It’s just a rule for their safety.
The first 9 weeks we worked on various skillsets to improve balance, cardiovascular fitness, locomotor skills, sportsmanlike conduct, and teamwork.  These are crucial skills that our students need to be able to master and carry with them in daily life activities. We will continue to work on these skills throughout the year, while adding new skills each 9 weeks.
We also worked with all students to assist them in creating a personalized physical education goal. In this, we encouraged the students to contemplate their likes and strengths in PE, as well as a focus area they would like us to help them improve. Our plan is to get this to all the teachers so they can review this with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences.   We will also revisit this individualized PE goal with each of the students several times throughout this school year.  Then, at the end of the year, we will once again review it with the students for them to see their personal growth. It will then be theirs to take home.
We look forward to continuing to work with your child this year to promote health and physical activity! Thank you for encouraging your child to foster a desire to have a healthy body through exercise and healthy eating!
Sincerely,
Mrs. K. Hinson
Mr. Brewer
